In the main event of Money in the Bank 2021, Roman Reigns successfully defended the WWE Universal Championship against Edge. It wasn’t as if “The Head of the Table” was without help, however. Seth Rollins, who has had his own issues with “The Rated R Superstar” interfered in the match multiple times, costing the challenger the match. The Usos attempted to interfere as well, though they were neutralized fairly quickly by Rey and Dominik Mysterio. After Reigns won, he watched as Edge and Rollins brawled to the back. Reigns took the mic, stating how everyone can now acknowledge him. This prompted familiar theme music, trumpets and all – on this night, John Cena made his return.

After stepping through the curtain to a raucous ovation from the Fort Worth, Texas crowd, Cena stood toe-to-toe with Reigns. He performed the “you can’t see me” hand sign to the Universal Champion before posing to the crowd. This was how the event went off the air. It would appear that Cena unofficially challenged Reigns for the title, a match that could take place as early as SummerSlam next month.
John Cena has been absent from WWE for over one year. His last appearance took place at WrestleMania 36, which saw him battle “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Fun House Match. In this match, which consisted of several callbacks to Cena’s early career and little nods to the fans alike, Wyatt emerged victorious and Cena disappeared from WWE programming.
