Jun Akiyama Wins D-Ou Grand Prix

Akiyama Grand Prix

On the final match of 2020 for Dramatic Dream Team (DDT) the winner of the D-Ou Grand Prix tournament would be decided. The two finalists were Konosuke Takeshita and Jun Akiyama at the Grand Prix finals. This would be a rematch from Ultimate Party 2020 but with higher stakes as the winner would go on to face Tetsuya Endo for the KO-D Openweight title on the 2/14 Kawasaki STRONG show.

As the prior match was extremely back and forth this match was anyone’s to guess, but in the end, the man who stood tall at the end was Jun Akiyama. He beat his opponent with a modified armlock thus setting up a very difficult test for Endo in February.

The Grand Prix in its short history has an extremely high success rate when it comes to challengers fighting for the title. With only one person failing in their challenge for the title. With that being said Endo and Akiyama did share the same block ending with the champion handing  Jun Akiyama his first loss in the company. History could repeat itself when the time comes for the title match.

At the same time, some major shining starts came from this tournament despite not winning. One name being Kazusada Higuchi who not only drew with Tetsuya Endo, but had a dominant victory over Jun Akiyama, beating him in just over four minutes. The only person to not lose against the two of them. Another being Soma Takao who was one of the only two people to beat Endo in a match the other being Makoto Oishi.

The tournament was a complete wild card to the very end, as even on the final block show there were risks of ties and tie-breakers being needed. Having a wild rematch like Takeshita vs Akiyama in the Grand Prix finals felt right. Now it comes down to one question of can Endo overcome the odds again?
