Star Gazing: Saya Kamitani

Saya Kamitani

Star Gazing is our series which will add to our already growing coverage of World Wonder Ring Stardom (Also known simply as Stardom) and the Joshi scene where we will get you up to speed with members of the Stardom roster. Today we will be focusing on Saya Kamitani one of Stardom’s rising stars and a guaranteed future world champion.

There aren’t many people who can have as big an impact in a short timeframe as Saya Kamitani.  Since debuting in August of 2019 she has already become Goddesses Of Stardom Champion and won the Rookie Of The Year 2019 tournament despite debuting so late in the year.  Kamitani’s career is young but the sky is seemingly the limit for the 23-year-old who Stardom has put a lot of stock into already.

Idol Background

Kamitani’s background is in dancing.  She has had a number of roles in the past dating back to 2014 when she was a support dancer.  She even passed an audition to become a member of the long-running idol group AKB48; but based on the group’s website she never became a full member. She also has experience as a back up dancer in theater.  Anyone who knows the standards of idol professions understands how difficult it is to make a career in that sector.  The minor success Kamitani achieved shows her dedications and abilities.  It also led her to the world of wrestling

Stardom Idols

Saya Kamitani joined Stardom Idols in October 2018.  The short-lived project aimed to have Tam Nakano train and run shows with talents like Kamitani who had idol backgrounds, similar to Actwres girl’Z training method.  Kamitani technically made her wrestling debut with Stardom Idols in a 49-second defeat to Miss Monol in a three on one handicap match in February 2019.  When Idols didn’t work out Kamitani was one of the only members to transition to being a proper Stardom trainee.  In July she passed her protest and debuted for Stardom proper in August against Momo Watanabe.

Rookie Of The Year 2019

It didn’t take Saya Kamitani long to start winning matches against performers senior to her, specifically Leo Onozaki and Saya Iida, she even got a huge win over Andras Miyagi in the Goddesses Of Stardom Tag League with a running shooting star press that had fans wowed.  If quickly became clear by the wins she was being given and the moves she was allowed to do that Saya Kamitani would be a big deal for Stardom.  She solidified this by winning the Rooke Of The Year 2019.  Saya Kamitani’s career trajectory was on the up, and then she made a decision that would define her career to date.

Queen’s Quest

On February 16th Saya Kamitani was faced with a decision.  Following a loss to Utami Hayashishita, she was offered a spot in Queen’s Quest, a faction that has been at the top of Stardom for its entire existence.  Kamitani joined QQ and this is a decision that has defined her run to date.  She has slot perfectly into Queen’s Quest who’s current mantra is that they are the future of Stardom, something Kamitani represents more than any other member.  It has allowed her to develop a personality that she wouldn’t have gotten in STARS or elsewhere and she is in there with some of the best wrestlers in Stardom which can only help her growth.  In the biggest moment of her career, Kamitani won the Goddesses Of Stardom Championships alongside Utami Hayashishita, a huge accomplishment for a talent just a year into her career and another sign that Stardom sees potential in her.

In one of her last matches, Kamitani pulled out a Phoenix Splash to secure the win.  The athletically gifted Kamitani continues to add to her repertoire of eye-catching moves and given she’s only 60 matches into her career it’s scary to think of hos good she will become.  We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say Saya Kamitani WILL be a World Of Stardom Champion some day.
