FTN: The Latest on William Carvalho, Jean Michael Seri and Gylfi Sigurdsson News
West Ham linked to Carvalho
West Ham United are closing in on a £30 million move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho. Having played a pivotal role for Portugal winning the European Championships last year and helping the side reach third in this summers Confederations cup, Slaven Bilic is set to break the bank to bring the man in. This would be a fantastic move for the club with depth in the midfield required with the side being completely opened up in the 4-0 loss to Manchester United at the weekend. West Ham have already signed Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic for £36 million, and this deal would take their summer spending to well over £60 million. A real statement of intent as they bid to finish higher than last season’s 11th place.
Experience in abundance at the Hawthorns
West Brom are set to announce the signing of experienced midfielder Gareth Barry from Everton. The Englishman has found himself fall down the pecking order at Goodison with multiple midfielders signing for the club in the last year. The 36 year old has made 628 Premier League appearances and West Brom manager Tony Pulis seems him as an ideal replacement for Scottish Darren Fletcher with the manager stating “I’m really looking forward to working with him”. After four years at Everton, the experienced midfielder is seeking a new challenge to prolong his Premier League career and will be a good signing for the Baggies.
Liverpool eye midfield ace
The French club have put a €40 million price-tag on the 25-year-old Ivorian, which seems a fairy reasonable amount in today’s market. Barcelona have also been reported to be interested in securing his services, but having completed the signing of former Tottenham Hotspur player Paulinho, they are likely to withdraw from this particular race. This should leave the way clear for Liverpool, should Jurgen Klopp decide that Seri has a place in his plans.
With the absence of Adam Lallana and the current ongoings surrounding Brazilian marvel Philippe Coutinho, Seri will be another option in what has suddenly become a thin midfield within the Liverpool ranks.
Everton announce big money move
Earlier on today, Everton announced the signing of Icelandic Gylfi Sigurdsson for a fee believed to be around £45 million. The deal has ended weeks of speculation regarding the midfielders future at the Liberty following the initial interest from the Merseyside club and former Premier League champions Leicester City.
Sigurdsson will prove to be a fantastic signing for Everton with the playmaker scoring nine times last season and contributing with 13 assists in the league. The move has taken Everton’s summer spending to a total of £133 million. Showing that the club has a real ambition to push its way into the top six this season.
This has left Ross Barkley’s future up in the air, having just suffered from what looks to be a torn hamstring and so it is unlikely that any clubs will be willing to meet Everton’s asking price for the promising midfielder before the end of the transfer window.
