Luis de la Fuente spoke to the media early for the Saudi Arabia clash and mentioned that they have to evaluate the Barcelona winger’s situation ahead of the match. When prompted to see if the attacker could play 45 minutes he stated “something like that”.

It is clear that the manager will continue to ease in the key player, hoping to use him in the more dangerous knockout round as opposed to the group stage. Yamal only got 20 minutes in the tournament opener, but he could be a half-time substitute this time around.

What This Means for Spain

With Nico Williams only playing five minutes against Cape Verde there is a clear issue for De La Fuente to handle. The wide duo were stars of the EURO’s but both have been unable to enter the World Cup in good health, leaving them unable to pull off their 4-3-3 system to the same effect.

Having Yamal back for 45 minute stint at least gives him more time to make his impact and potentially decide the match if needs be. It also allows the manager the choice of either starting the Barcelona man or bringing him on after 45, with each method having its own pros and cons.
