Following a disappointing start to the season, Leicester City are looking to strengthen their ever-changing squad. In Marti Cifuentes’ two games in charge, City looked poor defensively and lacked attacking threat. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that they are targeting a new option who can play off either flank or as an attacking midfielder.
Leicester City Eye Deal For Portuguese Talent
Joao Rego: Leicester City Interest
As reported by Cabine Sport, the Foxes are showing interest in securing Joao Rego’s services for the season. The potential loan deal would see the 20-year-old swap Portugal for the East Midlands, and have the chance to join permanently through the option to buy clause. The player even followed Leicester City on Instagram today, which further teases a potential transfer.
City values the youngster’s characteristics and flexibility within a team highly, as he can play multiple positions. The number 10 or a shadow striker are the roles that suit Cifuentes’ system, and are why there is interest. Throughout his career, Rego has played over 15 times on either wing or in the 10, which further highlights his versatility.
A move for Rego would mark the club’s second addition in what has been a slow transfer window. Asmir Begovic is the only other recruit and has joined as a second-choice goalkeeper, following the departure of Mads Hermansen. Bilal El Khannouss has also been a target for several clubs, which could open up space for the Portuguese talent.
How Does Joao Rego Suit Leicester City
Throughout the first two games of the Cifuentes era, it’s clear that the system requires technical players. This is why the likes of Harry Winks, Bilal El Khannouss, and Jannik Vestergaard have impressed. The need to take up new positions and be comfortable when rotating is a clear feature of the style of play and something that Rego could help with. Luke Thomas from left-back has often played in the left half space, while El Khannouss has dropped towards the base to break lines. These seamless movements haven’t necessarily been effective yet, but adding new profiles would certainly help.

Being good in tight spaces is also important, as teams are likely to sit in low blocks. The game versus Sheffield Wednesday suggested this, as the quality City possesses is often superior. Rego suits this aspect through his great dribbling and close control, which would help beat players and open up space.
With El Khannouss’ release clause expired and Abdul Fatawu also likely to stay, the attacking options this season are stellar. The addition of a new striker would further solidify this quality, but adding Rego would also be game-changing. The East Midlands outfit has also already seen success through this strategy, as Fatawu joined on loan from Sporting Lisbon and then permanently moved to the King Power Stadium after promotion.
Although they are two different profiles, young players from the Portuguese leagues do translate well and often flourish in England.
