Chelsea owners, BlueCo, have shown a clear intent to buy younger players since they acquired the club in 2022. This approach has been largely criticised, but the club does appear to be turning a corner. On August 27, 2024, Chelsea signed Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders; however, Fabrizio Romano now reports that Penders will leave Stamford Bridge on loan to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

The Chelsea project is beginning to reap the rewards of its huge investment. The club finished the 2024/25 season strongly, qualifying for the Champions League before demolishing Real Betis 4-1 in the Europa Conference League final.
Chelsea then travelled to the U.S. to participate in the Club World Cup. Despite a surprise defeat to Flamengo in the group stages, Enzo Maresca’s men progressed to the knockout rounds. They then beat Benfica 4-1, before beating Palmeiras to qualify for the semi-final. The West London club then brushed aside Fluminense to make the final. Chelsea were heavy underdogs against Paris Saint-Germain, but the Blues delivered a near-perfect performance, defeating the Champions League winners 3-0, with two goals from Cole Palmer and one from Joao Pedro.

Mike Penders was a part of the Chelsea squad at the Club World Cup, and despite not playing, the Belgian is considered “Special” by Chelsea. Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen both made costly mistakes last season, but Sanchez enjoyed an impressive tournament at the CWC.
Penders is clearly highly regarded at Stamford Bridge, but as reported by Romano, he will join Strasbourg on loan, with an agreement in place for next season. This will give the teenager vital playing time, and at 19 years old, the Belgian has plenty of time to make his mark at Chelsea.
CWC Triumph Sees Chelsea Bypass Manchester City
According to The Athletic, Chelsea’s Club World Cup triumph marked their 21st major title of this century. The historic win moved the West London club ahead of Manchester City (20), with Manchester United and Liverpool trailing with 18 and 17, respectively.

After plenty of inconsistencies over the last few seasons, Chelsea appear to be heading in the right direction, with a talented group of young players proving they can beat the best in Europe.
