‘Can Be Activated This Summer’: Manchester United Competing with Arsenal For £66.2 Million ‘Freak Athlete’

Manchester United found themselves eliminated from the 2024/25 FA Cup after a gutting loss to Fulham at Old Trafford. They are experiencing issues in the goal-scoring front, and there seems to be an interest in RB Leipzig man Benjamin Sesko.

Which Teams Will Compete With Manchester United For Sesko’s Signing?

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs to have expressed an interest in signing the 21-year-old forward in the 2025 summer window.  The reporter also claims that the Slovenian forward has a formally fixed release clause inserted into his contract, which runs up till the end of June, 2029.

It’s also added that this release clause is based on multiple parameters, which include goals, assists, as well as games played. Plettenberg adds that the release clause will have increased to £66.2 Million at the end of the 2024/25 season and that it “can be activated starting this summer”. However, it’s also indicated that Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have also showcased an eagerness to sign the RB Leipzig forward in the summer window and that the only major Premier League club not in the race to sign him is Manchester City.

Manchester United Struggling With Goal Trouble

There is a strong reason for the Red Devils wanting to sign a quality goalscorer in the summer window. They have experienced many issues when it comes to a consistent goal outlet. Rasmus Hojlund only has seven goals in 35 appearances, including two in the Premier League. Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee has only managed to score five times in 40 appearances for Manchester United.

Beyond the clinical on offer, the striker has a physical profile that most English sides crave. He has been described as a “freak athlete“. This is due to his height as well as his movement and enviable engine allowing him to impact play across the pitch.

The goal troubles have forced Ruben Amorim to promote young striker Chido Obi Martin into the first-team squad. The Red Devils have netted just 33 goals in 27 games, with only five other teams having a worse goal-scoring record in the Premier League. That is why they are eyeing the signing of a prolific striker like Sesko. The 21-year-old forward has scored 17 goals and provided five assists this season, including 10 strikes in 23 Bundesliga appearances so far.
