Liverpool Hold ‘Positive Contacts’ With ‘Talented Young Coach’ Who Could Replace Jurgen Klopp

Xabi Alonso is one of the candidates to take over from Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Liverpool currently hold a small lead in the Premier League over title holders Manchester City and rivals, Arsenal. Jurgen Klopp, who has overseen a rebirth at Anfield, announced earlier this year that this would be his last campaign in charge of the Reds. Over in his home country of Germany, Bayer Leverkusen appear set to end Bayern Munich’s dominant run in the Bundesliga and their manager Xabi Alonso appears the frontrunner to replace “The Normal One.

Bayern A Strong Contender, but Alonso Eyeing an England Move

French journalist Santi Aouna tweeted a major update on the pursuit of Alonso stating that “Liverpool had new positive contacts.” The 42-year-old former Anfield star is currently on a record-breaking run with Leverkusen. Die Schwarzroten are undefeated in all competitions and have established themselves as favourites to win both the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal.

Aouna noted that Alonso “wants the move to the Reds who will continue to push in the next weeks.” A potential meeting between the two clubs is not unlikely this season. Leverkusen and Liverpool are on top of the odds to win the Europa League. Dublin could play host to the Spaniard’s last match on the touchline for the German outfit, and it could come against his future club.

The Frenchman reported in an article for FootMercato “Bayern Munich is a clearly secondary choice.” The Bavarian club’s struggles under Thomas Tuchel are highlighting a weakness that could keep Alonso away. Liverpool, at the moment, present a much better chance of contending for domestic and continental silverware.

“Xabi Alonso’s heart is clearly leaning in favour of Liverpool,” Aouna stated. Joining Leverkusen from his role at Real Sociedad’s B Team, the Spaniard has highlighted his capabilities and proven himself to be “a talented young coach.” Liverpool, if they can seal the deal this summer, will be bagging a potential dynasty coach.
