Watch: Why the Chelsea project is failing

How Chelsea Have Lined Up Recently

Robert Sanchez has been a consistent fixture in the goal with Marc Cucurella, Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, and Axel Disasi making up the back line on most occasions, although what position they play isn’t always set with Disasi moving out right after starring in the centre of the defence for most of the campaign so far.

The defensive midfield spots have been occupied by Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, with Conor Gallagher dropping back to fill in when needed. Gallagher has been starting in the attacking midfield trio alongside any of Raheem Sterling, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Nicolas Jackson has been the preferred option to lead the line when fit and available.

Chelsea Recent Form and Tactics

Mauricio Pochettino has stuck to a base formation of 4-2-3-1 which has brought about a good spell recently with only one defeat in the past five games. A 2-2 draw with Arsenal would have been seen as a great result when the season began, although the performances on the pitch caused a different reaction.

Chelsea Injuries to Consider

As always, this isn’t Chelsea without injuries aplenty. The most recent injury update provided by the club has eight absentees. Mudryk is the newest name on that list after missing the weekend defeat to Brentford. He joins Armando Broja, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia, and Christopher Nkunku.

One positive is that Fernandez, who also missed the loss to the Bees, is not on the injury update and could be fit to play a part in this cup tie.
