Terms Agreed: Manchester United Secure Contract Agreement for ‘Fantastic’ £17Million Star

David de Gea

Manchester United have reached an agreement with David de Gea over the terms of his next long-term contract at the club, claims The Telegraph’s, Mike McGrath. This comes amid criticism towards the Spanish goalkeeper for his blunder in the Red Devils’ recent loss to West Ham United.

De Gea Close to Penning Another United Contract

It was reported last year that the Red Devils activated one-year contract extensions for many more players, but not for De Gea as they wanted him to sign a new deal with a reduced salary from his current rumoured wages of over £350k-a-week.

McGrath adds that his new deal will see him earn a lower basic salary and have more incentives for matches played and better performances. The terms have been agreed by De Gea and is only waiting to be signed off by the Red Devils’ officials. United are working on contracts for more players after having already announced new long-term deals for the likes of Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho, keeping them at the club for many years to come.

Spanish Goalkeeper Given Warning in New Contract Terms

Amid his error-prone nature over the last few games, it’s added by McGrath that De Gea has received a warning from the Red Devils that just because he’s signing a new contract doesn’t mean that he’ll remain the undisputed no.1 for many years to come. This comes amid rumours that United are being linked with goalkeepers such as Brentford man David Raya.

De Gea – who was signed for around £17 million in 2011 – has predominantly played under Erik ten Hag this season, despite the club signing two goalkeepers in Martin Dubravka on loan (before he left in January) and then Jack Butland on a short-term deal from Crystal Palace. Those two signings barely got game-time, with the Spaniard featuring in all 34 of United’s Premier League matches and managing to keep 15 clean sheets – more than any other goalkeeper.

The Spanish goalkeeper – who was hailed as “fantastic by David Moyes earlier this season – has kept 27 clean sheets in 53 appearances across all competitions for United this season and remains an important part of the squad despite a lot of fans calling for him to be replaced after his disappointing outing against West Ham recently.
