Leeds United Secure Champions League Left-Back – Taking The Club’s Captain

Max Wober Leeds United deal is complete on contract signing

Leeds United’s ongoing search for a left-back has finally come to an end, as Max Wober signs for the Whites from RB Salzburg. The Max Wober Leeds United move ends the club’s search for a left-back, leaving a striker as the main target for the rest of the window.

Who is Max Wober?

Max Wober is an Austrian left-back, who was previously the captain at RB Salzburg. Although Austria missed out on a place at the World Cup, the defender still appeared in wins over Andorra and Italy in November. Whilst Wober plays at centre-back for his country, his appearances in Austria have primarily come at left-back. The player joins for around a fee of £10 million pounds, with potential add-ons bringing the feet to around £17.5 million. His contract will last until 2027 at the very least.

How Does This Affect the Squad?

There are a few ways that this deal can affect the squad. The Max Wober Leeds United move almost certainly means that Pascal Struijk moves out of his left-back berth, potentially competing with Liam Cooper for a place at left centre-back. the Dutchman could also play on the left side of a back three, with the Austrian outside.

This move also brings up questions for Junior Firpo. His quality has been in question, and his fitness has been far from ideal with injuries plaguing both of his seasons at Elland Road. The Spaniard is likely to take a backup role, offering even more depth at the Premier League club.

What Do Leeds United Need Now?

Leeds United are still in the market for at least one player, particularly a centre-forward. Current rumours surround Coventry City striker Victor Gyokeres. The Swedish attacker already has twelve goals in the championship this season and could provide competition for Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford.

There is also potential for a move in midfield. Mateusz Klich is in line for a move to DC United in MLS, which could undo some of the hard work that Leeds did when adding depth to the middle of the pitch over the summer. While Swiss international Ardon Jashiri was in the discussion recently (according to Sky in Germany), there are no solid rumours linking a midfield to a Thorp Arch move.
