Lack of Playing Time at Tottenham Hotspur

Joe Rodon is a youth product of Swansea City, the club where the Welshman made his senior debut for in 2015. This was followed by a move to Tottenham in 2020 for a fee of around £11 million on a five-year contract. Now it seems inconceivable that Rodon will stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until it runs out.

The defender has struggled to get minutes on the pitch at the London club, making only 15 appearances in almost two seasons for Spurs, only three of which were made last season. This lack of playing time is likely a major reason for the Wales international’s departure.

While he may have had difficulty in North London, he is still a top defender in his own right. At 6’3”, Rodon is something of a giant, and Rennes will be getting a great player should they complete this move.

The French side are set to sign the 24-year-old on loan, which includes a buy option worth around £17 million. This will be Rodon’s second loan spell of his career, having previously spent a temporary spell at Cheltenham Town during his time at Swansea.

Still Important for Wales

Despite not playing many minutes for Tottenham, Rodon has been capped 28 times by the Wales national team, which is impressive when you consider the defender’s relatively tender age of 24. Also, the Welshman has solid major tournament experience, following his four matches with the Dragons at Euro 2020.

This will undoubtedly come in handy for Rodon and Wales at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance at the tournament since 1958. Though the official squads are yet to be announced, it would be shocking if Rodon doesn’t get to represent his nation on football’s greatest stage later this year.
