Tottenham Defender Subject of Serious Interest From Abroad With Big Consequences for Chelsea

Sergio Region

Barcelona are now seriously interested in the prospect of signing Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon, according to Gerard Romero on his Twitch channel. The Real Madrid academy product is no longer considered an essential part of the Lilywhites’ squad under Antonio Conte, and Barcelona will now look to bring him in instead of Chelsea man Marcos Alonso.

Barcelona Eyeing Sergio Reguilon Transfer Instead of Marcos Alonso

Reguilon Considered an Alternative to Marcos Alonso

The Blaugrana were initially eager to sign Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso to provide more competition to Jordi Alba going forward. However, the Premier League side are unwilling to negotiate with them for the deal after being dismayed with how the Spanish club hijacked their move to sign Jules Kounde. This makes their quest to acquire him much more difficult.

As a result, Barcelona have now been forced to look for alternatives, and are solidifying their interest in signing the ex-Real Madrid defender who has lost his regular spot in Conte’s squad.

It would be ideal for Chelsea if they were to hold onto Alonso this summer, and Barcelona’s decision to target Reguilon helps them towards that goal. The Blues have struggled in this transfer window so far, and are already searching for a centre-back and a striker, and thus they don’t want another necessity to add to their list.

In fact, Spurs have been offering Reguilon’s services to clubs for over a month as both parties want their association to be over. The La Liga giants are well aware of his availability and Xavi believes he can be an ideal fit for his squad.

The 25-year-old left-back joined Tottenham in 2020 from Real Madrid for a fee of around £27 million. He has since made 67 appearances for Spurs, scoring two goals and providing nine assists. Despite him being a former player of their fierce rivals Barcelona believe he can help them improve going forwards.

Barcelona’s Blockbuster Transfer Window So Far

Despite being over £1 billion in debt, Barcelona have been the superstars of the summer transfer window so far. They have already roped in ex-Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and former AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie on free transfers to bolster their squad.

The La Liga side have also made arguably the biggest transfer of the summer by signing Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich. They also bought Leeds United winger Raphinha to create a devastating attacking line, while also convincing Ousmane Dembele to re-sign with them.

Barcelona are now on the verge of signing Jules Kounde as their fifth summer signing, but that won’t slow them down. They are looking eager to strengthen their left-back area and can bring in Reguilon to compete with Alba.
