Chelsea Flop Could Be on the Move to Major Serie A Side

Timo Werner

Romelu Lukaku has already left Chelsea for Italy in this transfer window. New reports indicate that fellow attacker Timo Werner could follow the Belgian to the Serie A next season.

Fabrizio Romano reports on his latest CaughtOffside daily briefing that talks have started between Chelsea and Juventus over a move for the wayward striker, with other clubs potentially joining the race soon. Romano’s report indicates that a loan move is the preferred option.

A Misfire

The Blues signed the German international in 2020 after an impressive four-year stint with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. For Leipzig, the forward had an impressive tally of 95 goals in 159 games, with 78 of those coming in 127 league games.

Ever since the move to England, the 26-year-old has struggled to find form having only netted 23 goals in 89 appearances in a blue shirt, and with only 10 of those strikes coming in the Premier League. To say Werner hasn’t lived up to his fee is an understatement which is why the club will be happy to offload him this summer.

Changes at Chelsea

With new owners taking over the club, this off-season is a summer of change as the team attempts to rebuild and get rid of some of the previous regimes’ expensive failures while also providing Thomas Tuchel with a squad capable of competing on the biggest stages.

In order to get players in, there will no doubt have to be more departures. Someone like Werner could be a necessary casualty as Chelsea aim to bulk up their defence following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen earlier in the summer.

Juventus could benefit from the move as they require added depth up front following the expiry of Alvaro Morata’s loan.
