Although Sunderland’s season ended just last weekend with a play-off final victory at Wembley, news of possible upcoming transfers has already begun. We take a look at the latest Sunderland transfer news ahead of what could be a busy summer on Wearside as the club looks forward to their return to the Championship.
Sunderland Transfer Latest: Black Cats Want Nathan Broadhead Back Plus Ross Stewart Interest Increasing
Talks to Open With Everton as Sunderland Want Nathan Broadhead to Return
Everton striker Nathan Broadhead impressed during his season-long loan at Sunderland and it is unsurprising that the Black Cats are keen for him to return. The Sunderland Echo have reported that talks between the two clubs are set to begin this week.
Broadhead made a big impact at the Stadium of Light, becoming a firm favourite with fans. His 13 goals helped the club achieve promotion and without two spells out through injury, his tally could have been a lot more. The Wales striker has just one year left on his current contract at Everton and Sunderland could try to bring the player back to Wearside on a permanent deal.
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “We will have a conversation with Everton this week, to see where they are at with it and where we are at with it, and see if that’s aligned. We have to respect the fact that he is an Everton player.
“We have seen him as our player for the year, because we had to get the best out of him but now that the season is finished he unfortunately goes back to being an Everton player. Look, he’s had some incredible moments and he’s been an inspiration in many respects in terms of some of the goals he’s scored.
“It has been harder for him of late because of injury but you can’t take away from the fact that he has got all the attributes to go and play at Championship level.”
Leon Dajaku Signs Permanently
German winger Leon Dajaku has become Sunderland’s first signing of the summer. The 21-year-old was signed on a season-long loan deal from Union Berlin; however, a clause in the contract was activated meaning the deal could be a permanent one. Dajaku was named on the recently announced retained list. The former Bayern Munich player played 27 times for the Black Cats last season, scoring four goals.
Sunderland AFC today confirmed its retained list for the 2022-23 season.

Fellow German Thorben Hoffmann has returned to Munich following his own loan deal having not played enough games to trigger the clause in his contract to make the deal permanent.
Sunderland Transfer News: Ross Stewart a Wanted Man
It will come as little surprise that top scorer Ross Stewart is attracting interest from clubs on both sides of the border. The Daily Record and the Sunderland Echo are reporting that Rangers and a host of clubs in England are interested in signing the Scottish star.
Middlesborough, QPR and Sheffield United are all interested in Stewart who scored 26 goals in his first full season in English football. However, any enquiries are likely to receive no encouragement as Alex Neil looks to keep his best players and also strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
Stewart is under contract at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2023; however, it is believed that the club will be looking to hand their star striker a new contract in the coming weeks.
