A Sven Botman departure from Ligue 1 side Lille is looking more and more likely. At the moment, it appears as if Italian giants AC Milan are in the lead for the Dutchman’s signature.

Sven Botman Departure From Lille Looking Likely

A Terrific Defender

“In January, there were opportunities to leave but we had the Champions League and we were in a good position. I think these offers will come back,” Botman said to L’Equipe via Fabrizio Romano. “If it is the last season at Lille? If things go as planned, yes”.

These quotes coming from Botman himself make his desire to find a new club quite evident. This isn’t a knock on Lille, but Botman seems ready for an upgrade in his career.

At only 22-years-old, Botman is already a terrific defender. His age, however, shows that he’s only going to get better from here. Most defenders don’t enter their prime years until roughly around their age 26 or 27 season, so Botman’s potential is tantalising.

Although Lille haven’t been as good this season, Botman was a major factor in their Ligue 1-winning campaign last season. That’s a major achievement considering the talent (and massive salaries) at hand at Paris Saint-Germain.

Botman primarily plays the centre-back position. He has the height and frame to be competitive in the air and pair up with the toughest match-ups, but also the agility and skill to stop counter-attacking wingers. He fits the mould of the modern centre-back.

Should he move to Milan, it would be a major purchase for the Rossoneri. Milan have strong, young centre-backs in Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu, but Botman would instantly become a starter. Milan are on the come-up and competing for the Scudetto this season, so Botman can improve his career by moving there but also make Milan look more like its former self.
