Dortmund Win Race for Schlotterbeck Signature

Nico Schlotterbeck attracted a lot of interest. English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were reportedly interested in the SC Freiburg defender. Borussia Dortmund have held transfer interest in Schlotterbeck for some time. The German club was keen to bolster their defence after injury issues caused major problems for them this year.

Schlotterbeck Leaves SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg will again lose a key player they have developed over the years. Robin Koch and Luca Waldschmidt joined the club around the same age that Schlotterbeck did. After a couple of successful years, the pair departed the club for double-digit fees to Leeds United and SL Benfica respectively.

SC Freiburg has done a great job replacing key players, with Schlotterbeck coming in shortly after Koch left to fill the centre-back role. SC Freiburg has a difficult task ahead to replace the outbound, Schlotterbeck.

Dortmund Outlook With New Signing Schlotterbeck

Borussia Dortmund are set to complete the transfer signing of a young German central defender to help bolster their squad. Right now, the options at centre back are few and far between with midfielder Emre Can playing significant minutes in the centre back role. Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji, Dan-Axel Zagadou, and Marin Pongracic have all been unavailable for stretches this season. Schlotterbeck will bring experience and most important a clean injury record to an injury-ridden backline.

Schlotterbeck also brings real quality to a team with a porous defensive record. This season Borussia Dortmund has conceded 46 goals, the second-highest of any team within the top 10 of the Bundesliga. SC Freiburg on the other hand has conceded 37 goals, the third-lowest of any team in the Bundesliga. Schlotterbeck reinforces the Borussia Dortmund centre and should end up a great signing.
