Dani Alves Coy on Barcelona Future

Dani Alves

Dani Alves returned to Barcelona this season to much surprise of the footballing world. Now, however, his contract expires in June, and he’s unsure about the future, according to Fabrizio Romano.

“Nobody from the club told me about my future, there are no talks ongoing yet,” Alves said. “Not only the youngsters but also the old players now have to show that they deserve to play in this Barça team.”

On the surface, this seems surprising as Barcelona have been very active in renewing players. They’re also active when it comes to upgrading the team with new players, such as in the midfield and the defence. After a stalling in their pursuit of Antonio Rudiger, it remains to be seen what Barcelona will do with Alves.

Dani Alves Unsure on Barcelona Future

A Starring Past

Alves remains one of the premier faces of the club during the last decade. He had stints elsewhere in Europe recently, such as at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, but Alves is still in Barcelona lore.

Trophies were plentiful during his time. While at the club, Alves has won six La Liga titles, three Champions League titles, five Spanish Cups, five Spanish Super Cups, four UEFA Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups.

Alves remained successful when he sought out new journeys in Italy and France.

When Barcelona needed him most, however, he returned. Barcelona struggled mightily out the gates this season, due in large part to the departure of Lionel Messi. The team lacked a true veteran presence. Alves seemingly did not hesitate to return, and he’s helped in the club’s improvement along with former teammate and now manager Xavi.

Appearances for Barcelona may be hard to come by in the future as Alves turns 39-years-old next month. With that being said, he brings in leadership and a strong presence.
