Gremio and Juventus
Douglas Costa has been on loan at Gremio in a deal that saw him depart parent club Juventus until the end of the 2021/22 Serie A season but things have not worked out in Brazil at the club where he started his career. Costa had been at Juventus for three seasons before making the loan move but his return coincided with Gremio being relegated from Brazils’ top division.
The winger showed huge promise at Juventus but he could never produce consistency due to ongoing injuries and by 2019, manager Maurizio Sarri had decided the player was no longer part of his plans and he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 campaign. However, Costa again failed to make a lasting impression in Germany and thus was unable to earn a permanent contract there.
Poor Contribution for Gremio
At Juventus, Costa was involved in over 100 goals, but during his temporary spell with Gremio, he was more prolific at collecting yellow cards than scoring. In the Brazilian Serie A, he picked up seven yellow cards but was only involved where goals are concerned on five occasions. Ultimately this has led to Gremio no longer requiring his services from next season although the situation has also not been helped by the Brazilian side’s financial problems.
ESPN have reported that one possible destination for the winger could be the MLS and LA Galaxy with negotiations said to be in progress, although with some way to go for any deal to be completed, leaving the 31-year-old with a very uncertain future for now. With his experience, however, he will surely be able to find a new club even if it is only on a short term basis.
