Manchester City’s warm weather training plans have been shelved as they feel the current Covid-19 situation makes it a difficult trip to justify, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Manchester City’s Warm Weather Training Plans Cancelled
Covid Concerns
Manchester City had been expected to travel to Abu Dhabi later in January but following the recent cases of Covid at the club and certain travel restrictions being in place, they have decided to cancel the trip.
No League Cup
For the past four seasons, Manchester City have had the League Cup to themselves but this season they will not participate in the final after being knocked out by West Ham United. As a result, the warm weather training trip was planned to replace that yearly trip down Wembley Way.
Break
Following their next Premier League match on Saturday, January 22 against Southampton as they look to increase their lead at the top of the table, City have a break of two weeks and the club are no strangers to training in Abu Dhabi. As Ornstein explains, City have even trained there prior to being taken over in 2008 by the Abu Dhabi United Group, but the clubs’ risk assessments have dictated that the stakes are too high at this time of increased infection around the world. Following their mini-break, City will face Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round.
Contingency
It is not yet known whether City already have a contingency plan in place for the two week period but it is expected that they will be involved in some sort of team activities and may even be given some additional time off to spend with families. The club are yet to confirm the plans and no official statement has yet been released.
