Sunderland have today completed their first signing of the January transfer window. Northern Ireland U21 international Trai Hume has signed from Linfield for an undisclosed fee on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer was confirmed by safc.com.

19-year old right-back Trai Hume becomes Sunderland’s first signing of this transfer window as Lee Johnson looks to strengthen his injury-hit promotion chasers. A new full-back was a priority for the Black Cats head coach and he has been quick to act. Highly-rated Hume, who can also play in midfield has already won five caps for the Northern Ireland U21 side. He has also starred for Linfield this season in both League and UEFA Conference League games.
The youngster has registered three goals and two assists so far this season. His latest and last goal for Linfield coming in Saturday’s 6-1 demolishing of Dungannon Swifts.
Trai Hume Can’t Wait to Get Started
Soon after signing for his new club, Hume said: “It feels amazing to be here at this massive club and I can’t wait to get out there in front of the fans with my new teammates. I came to the Sheffield Wednesday match and it was absolutely bouncing – I loved every second of it. I’ve played over 50 games in the Irish league and I think that will help me settle in, but this is the right time for me to test myself in a new environment and this is the right club. Sunderland are aiming for bigger and better things and I can’t wait to get going.”
Lee Johnson Finally Gets His Man
Lee Johnson, who has been tracking Hume since last summer, was delighted to have finally got his man. He said: “We have been tracking Trai since the summer window and we are delighted to welcome him to Sunderland AFC. We are looking forward to working with him and seeing how he adapts to English football and the challenges of League One, as well as having a good calibre of player around him. We have to give him time, but we also have to push him as hard as we can to integrate him within the first team as soon as possible.”
