Real Madrid have confirmed in an official club statement that Luka Jovic has tested positive for Covid-19, meaning he will miss the clubs’ next match against Getafe.
Real Madrid Striker Luka Jovic Tests Positive for Covid-19
Isolation
An official statement from Real Madrid confirmed the positive test for Jovic, although it stopped short of offering any information on how long he will need to isolate for.
“Real Madrid informs that our player Luka Jovic has given a positive result in the Covid-19 tests carried out on Friday morning.”
Better News Elsewhere in the Squad
Despite the news of Jovic testing positive, there has been better news in regard to three other Real Madrid players who have recently returned positive tests. The club have confirmed that Thibaut Courtois, Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga had returned positive tests on 29 December, but on Thursday Marca announced that Courtois had returned a second negative PCR test and both Valverde and Camavinga have now returned negative tests and will take second PCR tests on New Years Eve.
Now that Courtois has returned a second negative test he can now rejoin training with his teammates and should be able to be available for selection for the match against Getafe on Sunday 2 January. Although, this will need to be ratified by La Liga.
The number of Covid cases around football continues to be a concern and it is therefore a surprise that Real players have travelled far and wide during the La Liga winter break. Valverde was in Argentina whilst Courtois himself spent some time in Dubai. This again raises the question of whether clubs should exercise tighter rules over players travelling during a worldwide pandemic. As the cases continue to grow, so to do the questions surrounding how football is handling the Covid-19 pandemic.
