Real Madrid Interested in Chelsea Defender Antonio Rüdiger

Antonio Rüdiger

Real Madrid are showing genuine interest in Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger, who’s set to be a free agent this summer. Fabrizio Romano reports that nothing has been necessarily spoken about with Los Blancos, due to the fact that Rüdiger is still in talks with his current club. Chelsea’s most recent contract proposal has not been accepted, however.

The Player and the Fit

Rüdiger is one of football’s premier centre-backs and is enjoying another stellar season for Chelsea once again. Since arriving in 2017, Rüdiger’s been a common name in Chelsea’s line-up. This, of course, is meaningful as Chelsea continue to be very competitive in the Premier League and are the reigning champions of Europe.

Real Madrid continue to be seen as the pinnacle of football, however. Many players find it difficult to turn down an opportunity to play for Los Blancos. They also have a staunch defence. This includes younger players like Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao but also experienced players such as David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, and team captain Marcelo. It never hurts to further upgrade strong position groups. This is what Real Madrid wants to do with Rüdiger. Furthermore, the possibility of getting a player of his calibre for free is definitely worth pursuing.

Rüdiger is 28-years-old. This means he still has a few years at an elite level.

Real Madrid is always appealing, there’s no doubt about that. Chelsea, however, remain a very strong club. They’re right in the thick of things both domestically and in Europe. They also have a stockpile of talented defenders outside of Rüdiger, such as Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, Reece James, and more.

Rüdiger deciding to stay would be no surprise. Considering he loves the club and manager in Thomas Tuchel, as Romano mentioned, it would be wise for Chelsea to fix up their contract proposal as Real Madrid have a tendency to do what they must to get what they want.
