Joseph Olowu Extends Doncaster Rovers Contract

Good Form Rewarded

Olowu initially signed a short-term contract to join Doncaster Rovers in League One. The former Arsenal academy defender, released by the Premier League giant last summer, had been training with Rovers in pre-season in a bid to earn himself a contract.

Olowu also featured for Manchester United at U23 level.

He has now put pen to paper on a deal keeping him at the Keepmoat Stadium until the summer of 2023.

Olowu has proved a much-needed signing for Doncaster, who are struggling in League One this season – sitting 23rd in the table.

Every team tends to have an injury crisis to shout about at some point in the season, but for Doncaster, the numbers are really getting thin.

Olowu has filled in at left-back and centre-back, his versatility is key for Rovers. He was sent off v Bolton Wanderers recently, his suspension, which Doncaster unsuccessfully appealed, a further blow to manager Richie Wellens.

His performances so far have replicated that of a confident talent and he is impressing, despite Doncaster’s rather dismal campaign so far.

Richie Wellens is working on a tight budget and Olowu’s addition, especially on a free, has proved a fruitful one.

Olowu Can Go Far

Rovers boss Richie Wellens told doncasterroversfc.co.uk that Olowu can go far in the game, he said: “We believe we’ve got a great young centre-back in Joseph. He has all the attributes to go really far in the game and we believe he could develop into a key player for us.

“His attitude on and off the pitch has been first class since he arrived, and we’re delighted that he sees his future here with us.”

Doncaster are currently without the injured Ro-Shaun Williams. Olowu’s suspension led to Rovers’ popular performer Tommy Rowe taking his place in the back line alongside captain Tom Anderson.

Club legend James Coppinger, who now plays a vocal role in Rovers’ recruitment team added: “We know the attributes a Doncaster Rovers centre back should have, and Joseph’s strong character, willingness to improve, and his performances on the pitch make him someone that we believe can have a bright future with this club.

“We don’t want to be a club that is always rebuilding – we have a clear idea of what a Doncaster Rovers team should look like and I’m working closely with the manager, Graham (Younger, talent identification manager) and the board so we can build something that everyone associated with the club can be proud of.”

Doncaster have changed their approach to signings since Wellens came in. Under previous managers, transfers were very much short-term with one-year contracts and loans very much taken advantage of – Rovers are suffering the long-term effects of that short-term model as we speak. January is likely to be a crucial month for the club’s League One status with additions needed.
