Jorginho: Agent Confirms No Talks Over New Chelsea Deal

Jorginho

The agent of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has confirmed they are not in talks to sign a new contract with the club.

Jorginho has become a crucial member of the team for The Blues in recent seasons and has worn the captain’s armband in Cesar Azpilicueta’s absence.

Jorginho: Agent Confirms No Contract Talks With Chelsea

Jorginho’s Fruitful Summer

Jorginho, 29, has played 18 games for Chelsea so far this season, scoring four and assisting one. The Italian made an error in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge – a lapse in judgement allowed Jadon Sancho to double his tally for the season on the counter-attack. However, Jorginho made up for this, as he knows best, from the penalty spot, getting Chelsea’s equaliser.

The summer couldn’t have transpired any better for Jorginho, who was key to a Champions League and Euro 2020 double for club and country.

His agent, Joao Santos, has spoken to TuttoMercatoWeb (via Fabrizio Romano) about his clients future. Santos said: “We’re not in talks to extend the current deal with Chelsea. He’s still under contract until June 2023 – maybe we’ll open talks in the next months.”

Chelsea’s One-Year Policy Could Be Reason

As crucially an asset Jorginho is for The Blues, he is turning 30 later this month and Chelsea are known for only giving out one-year contracts to players aged 30+, so that could be a contributing factor. However, it’s not entirely known if Thomas Tuchel has or will change that stance if he has a say.

If it comes to it, with around 18-months left on his current deal, Jorginho will certainly have options to leave Chelsea. Having helped Roberto Mancini’s Italy to European success, he is likely to be well sought after within Serie A. He starred in Serie A previously with Napoli, of course. With such a short time left on his contract, clubs will be eyeing up a discounted fee, though it surely will be difficult to envisage Chelsea simply parting ways with the midfielder, who placed third in the 2021 Ballon d’Or award, behind Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.

Jorginho is a few games away from surpassing his 160 Napoli appearances with Chelsea and you wouldn’t be quick to oppose the suggestion that he will reach 200 games for The Blues.
