Total Penalty of -21
Derby had already been served with a 12 point penalty and now with a further nine it takes the total points deducted to 21 with the club being punished for financial breaches under owner Mel Morris as well as being placed into administration and it now leaves them with a total of minus three points and 18 points from safety meaning relegation is all but a certainty for Wayne Rooney’s men.
Principles and Regulation
English Football League chief executive Trevor Birch has said that the processes needed to ensure that principles and regulations are upheld. Mr Birch said, as cited by dcfc.co.uk: “The EFL’s objective throughout this ongoing process has been to ensure that the principles of the regulations were upheld on behalf of all clubs. In order to assess the sporting sanction that was applicable to apply to these breaches, previous P&S cases have been carefully reviewed and guidance taken from them.”
Derby have put forward a case for mitigating circumstances relating to the financial breaches but the EFL feel that the decision taken is the correct and sensible one with Birch continuing to explain: “The EFL has also considered the P&S sanction guidelines as well as mitigation put forward by the club. Given the complex circumstances of the case and the various outstanding regulatory issues between the EFL and Derby County, the League is satisfied at the agreed outcome and the sensible approach taken by both parties in negotiating this outcome and in respect of the appeal withdrawal.”
Difficult Times Ahead
Derby County face an increasingly uncertain future and now the club’s administrators, Quantuma, will continue to focus on ensuring the future of the famous club is secured as they continue to look for new owners. Despite the news being bad for the club, Carl Jackson speaking for the administrators has said that it does now allow them to focus on a long-term strategy to rebuild the club: “This conclusion allows us to proceed with our restructuring strategy for the club with prospective interested parties.”
Wayne Rooney, his players and the fans will be the people that suffer the most from this latest blow but now they will all come together to fight and achieve what would be a great escape from relegation.
