Ben Chilwell, Tammy Abraham and James Ward-Prowse All Added to England Squad

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has become the third name to be added to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

He replaced Kalvin Phillips, who has become a regular for England in recent months. Southgate’s decision follows a mixed weekend for Ward-Prowse at Southampton. The 26-year-old scored at Stamford Bridge before being sent off as the Saints lost 3-1 to now-league leaders Chelsea.

His goal on Saturday, October 2, was his second of the season with plenty more expected from the set-piece expert.

The Southampton captain has a healthy output going forward and will no doubt continue that. Ward-Prowse has scored one goal in eight appearances for the England national team so far.

Elsewhere, Ben Chilwell replaced Chelsea teammate Reece James in the setup yesterday, whilst Tammy Abraham was added following a Man of the Match display for Roma against Empoli at the weekend. Abraham hasn’t replaced anyone in Southgate’s squad, he has just added to the numbers.

Tammy Abraham Enjoying Return to Form Since Roma Move

The England striker has enjoyed a return to top form since making the move from Chelsea to Roma. He has fit into Jose Mourinho’s new side like a glove, scoring four goals and assisting another three in his nine appearances across Serie A and the Europa Conference League.

Roma have won five of their seven Serie A games this season and sit fourth in the table, six points off top spot.

Abraham has come a long way since being ignored by Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. Despite picking up a Champions League medal, for a player of his age the importance of playing as many games as possible has to be stressed.

Where England Stand

England are top of Group I in World Cup qualifying and are yet to taste defeat but will be looking to bounce back from a 1-1 draw with Poland on September 8, halting their 100% winning record.

The Three Lions are without Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, who has picked up an injury, and John Stones has been included, despite having not played for Manchester City this season.
