Manchester City have confirmed that, after being charged by Cheshire Police, left-back Benjamin Mendy has been suspended.

Benjamin Mendy Suspended Following Police Charge

The club released a statement, which read: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation. The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against three complainants aged over 16 between October 2020 and August 2021, Cheshire Constabulary said.

Manchester City confirmed that Mendy has been suspended, with the matter subject to legal process. What happens next is unclear, as is how long the full-back will be suspended for. Mendy, like any defendant, has the right to a full and fair trial under the law.

The club will hope to see an end to the situation as soon as possible.

Mendy is set to appear at Cheshire Magistrates Court on Friday, August 27.
