Crystal Palace are eyeing a move for Watford midfielder Will Hughes, according to Joe Doyle of Football.London.
The 26-year-old has one-year deal left on his current contract with the Hornets, and could be on his way out of the club.
Crystal Palace Looking to Make Move for Will Hughes
Unhappy at Watford
Hughes is reportedly currently an unhappy at Vicarage Road. According to the report, the former Derby County midfielder has rejected a five-year deal to remain with the club.
As a result, the 26-year-old has been told to train with the academy ahead of the new season.
Palace have recently added central midfielder Conor Gallagher to their ranks, but could still add to their squad this summer.
Patrick Vieira is looking to add strength in depth to his squad ahead of the new season. Strength in depth is something that the Eagles have struggled with in the past, especially in midfield.
H9wever, central midfield is an area Palace are well-accounted for. New signing Gallagher has joined James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic, Jeffrey Schlupp and Cheikou Kouyate in competing for places. Eberechi Eze is also yet to return from injury.
Contract Could Still Be Signed
Hughes could still yet sign a new deal with Watford. Speaking in May to the Watford Observer, he said: “There’s no thoughts in my head about not me moving elsewhere.
“That’s in my agent’s and the club’s hands. That’s not something I’m really concerned about and it’s not something that I’ve really thought about. I’ll give my all for Watford until my contract is up.”
Hughes is likely to receive more game time at Vicarage Road than if he was to join Palace, meaning he could opt to remain with the club.
According to the Watford Observer, both Aston Villa and Newcastle United are monitoring his situation.
