Alex Telles Suffers Injury Setback

Alex Telles

Manchester United defender Alex Telles is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in training. Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told MUTV that the left-back slipped and twisted his ankle, which will keep him out for around a month.

The news comes as a blow to Solskjaer and his pre-season preparations. Telles had been expected to play a part in the club’s four remaining fixtures ahead of their Premier League season opener against Leeds United on 14 August, but will now be unable to feature until after the new campaign is underway.

Manchester United Have Been on Pre-Season Training in Surrey

Last season’s Premier League runners-up have set up their pre-season training camp in Surrey, with the Covid-19 pandemic having prevented the club from embarking on a tour outside of Europe.

The Old Trafford club took on Wayne Rooney’s Derby County in their opening pre-season fixture, winning the game 2-1 after goals from Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri.

Left-back Alex Telles was expected to be in the squad for their second fixture, away at London club Queen’s Park Rangers, with Solskjaer informing the media of the Brazil international’s injury in the build-up to the match.

The Norwegian said: “Unfortunately, Alex slipped and he twisted his ankle so he’ll be out for a few weeks. We’re hoping that it’s not going to be too bad but he’ll be out for a little while.”

Brandon Williams to Deputise for Luke Shaw

One player yet to join the rest of the Manchester United first-team in their pre-season preparations is England left-back Luke Shaw. The 26-year-old is on holiday after his exploits for his country at Euro 2020, which leaves an opening for Brandon Williams to fill in at left-back.

Telles has been largely credited with playing a crucial role in Shaw’s recent renaissance, having provided valuable competition for the England defender’s place in United’s starting line-up.

With the Brazilian now sidelined, 20-year-old Williams has been presented with a chance to impress in the absence of both of his more senior colleagues.
