Toby Alderweireld Nearing End of Tottenham Hotspur Career

Tottenham Hotspur have accepted a £13 million bid from Qatari club Al-Duhail for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld. Al-Duhail will now need to agree personal terms with the 32-year-old defender before completing medicals ahead of a potential move to Qatar. The transfer will bring the curtain down on Alderweireld’s six-year-long association with Tottenham Hotspur.

Toby Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015. The Belgian had an instant impact on the Spurs defence. Along with compatriot Jan Vertonghen, they formed one of the best defensive pairings in Tottenham history. The duo, though, failed in their bid to end Spurs’ trophy-less run after coming agonisingly close on several occasions.

Alderweireld is one of the several players likely to leave Tottenham this season. The defender had an approach from Antwerp turned down earlier in the summer. He will now join former Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi at Al-Duhail, however.

A New Look Spurs Defence This Season

After almost half a decade, Tottenham Hotspur will be without either Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld in their squad. Danny Rose, another member of the defensive line, fell out of favour a couple of seasons back and joined Watford on a free this year. Kieran Trippier also left the club in 2019 to join Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham have already been linked with a host of central defenders this season. They are reportedly in advanced talks with Atlanta over the potential transfer of Argentine Cristian Romero. Takehiro Tomiyasu is another player that is close to joining Spurs this transfer window as Espírito Santo reshapes the backline.
