A thigh injury that he picked up during the friendly game with Austria on Wednesday, June 2 will see England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Euro 2020. It will come as a bitter blow to the player who fought his way back into Gareth Southgate’ plans but will now miss out as a result.

Thigh Scan Confirms Fears
With only moments left of England’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria, it was an alarming sight to see the young right back limping from the pitch with a thing injury. Scans on Thursday revealed that the injury is not a good one and the player will now be ruled out of Euro 2020.
Six Weeks Out
The diagnosis is that Alexander-Arnold will be out for up to six weeks, so whilst he will miss the European Championships, there is at least better news for Liverpool fans that he should be ready for the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season. The player will not remain with the England camp according to The Times and will return home to focus on his rehabilitation.
When leaving the pitch he looked a disconsolate figure and will be frustrated to miss out.
Replacements
England were already felt to be top heavy with four right backs in the squad for the upcoming tournament so this injury may mean a chance for the likes of those who missed out on the squad, including Jesse Lingard and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse. Lingard had a good loan spell with West Ham United and can add dynamism and goals to the squad, whereas Ward-Prowse may be a better fit for crossing from the right and he is known for being deadly from set pieces.
Southgate is left with a decision to make and for Alexander-Arnold his time will surely come again in next years World Cup in Qatar and beyond.
