One More Year

Veteran goalkeeper Ruddy is close to extending his stay at Molineux for another season. The 34-year-old joined Wolves in 2017 after he left Norwich City when his contract there came to a close and was a key part of the club gaining promotion to the Premier League, playing in all but one game in the Championship.

His performances were rewarded as he was selected as the stopper for that season’s PFA Championship Team of the Year. However, since then, Ruddy has struggled to get many minutes on the pitch with Wolves bringing in Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Rui Patricio as their new first choice.

An additional year would be a reward for a player who has made 65 appearances, conceded 52 goals and kept 34 clean sheets and has been a popular player with teammates, and his experience around the dressing room is still considered to be positive.

Money-Saving

The global coronavirus pandemic has meant that clubs are feeling the pinch financially and keeping hold of John Ruddy, who is still a very capable pair of hands, means the club keep an experienced and trusted back-up goalkeeper as well as not needing to splash out on a more expensive and untested keeper.

Rui Patricio will still take the number one spot but Wolves’ new manager, when they come in to replace the recently departed Nuno Espirito Santo, will know they are covered between the sticks.
