Nottingham Forest academy graduate Will Swan says it is a “massive achievement” to finally score his first senior goal. The young forward netted the first of two goals for Port Vale in a 3-2 defeat to Cheltenham Town.

Swan: I Will Hopefully Get More Goals

Will Swan has been limited to only a handful of opportunities with League Two side Port Vale since signing on-loan in January.

The 20-year-old has started just once since arriving at Vale Park, coming off the bench against Tranmere Rovers, Cambridge United and Cheltenham Town.

Speaking to Port Vale’s YouTube channel, Swan said: “It is a massive achievement for me personally. It is disappointing not to come away with the win as well, but I will hopefully get some more goals in the next few games.”

He added: “I just want to get as much experience, as much game time and as many goals as I can. I want to learn as much as I can from the lads and the gaffer.”

The Valiants have recently had a change in manager following a decline in form. The Staffordshire-based side sacked John Askey but moved quickly to appoint former Walsall boss Darrell Clarke.

A change in leadership, however, has not hindered Swan’s development – instead, it has had a positive impact on the dressing room.

“I have really liked it [the change in manager],” Swan said. “He has brought the team together. He has come in with his own ideas and own ways of doing things. I really like him.

“In good time I think we will pick up the form needed.”

Speaking about Swan’s goal, boss Clarke added: “He will be pleased to have got his first league goal, but it won’t be too memorable as we have lost the game.

“He is an honest, decent, hard-working young lad and hopefully he is going to have a good career.”
