David Luiz to Be Offered New Contract at Arsenal

Key Player for Mikel Arteta

David Luiz has been a key player for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal this season despite a turbulent first full campaign for the Spanish manager.

Luiz has made 20 appearances for the Gunners this season, scoring once in a 2-1 win in the Europa League against Rapid Vienna.

A hamstring injury and suspension following a controversial red card sustained in a 2-1 defeat against Wolves at the start of the month have kept him sidelined, but he has been integral in the way Arteta wants his side to play.

Issues in Defence for Arsenal

Naturally, with the way Arsenal like to play out of defence, mistakes will be made and David Luiz has been no exception to those mistakes.

The Gunners may have only conceded 25 goals in the league this season, but the manner of the goals will be a cause for concern for Arteta. However, the Arsenal manager believes that the experience of Luiz will help the squad eradicate those issues going forward.

Arsenal Contract Policy

According to the report, Arsenal’s club policy is to only offer players over the age of 30 a one-year deal. With Luiz out of contract in the summer, the club are actively looking to extend the 33-year-old’s deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Luiz is the only contracted player who is out of contract in the summer, with Martin Ødegaard, Dani Ceballos and Mat Ryan all set to return to their parent clubs at the end of the season.

Arteta Says Luiz “Is One of the Key Role Models That We Have in Our Team”

Speaking about Luiz last month, Arteta said: “It’s credit to him because he trains really hard.

“This season has been really tough in the beginning because he’s been through some injuries but he’s kept at it, he understood his role, he knows his role in the team, he’s one of our leaders and he’s so willing to keep improving.

“He knows the things that he’s really good at and the things where there is still room for improvement. He’s a really honest man with himself. He’s won everything and it’s a joy to work with him.

“He’s a great example for them (the youngsters). He’s got a good mixture with them between some banter and then some stick.

“They all listen to him because of who he of is and what he’s done in the game. But also because how he behaves every day, how professional he is and how he goes about the job. He is one of the key role models that we have in our team.”
