Sam Cosgrove Signs for Birmingham City

Sam Cosgrove has joined Birmingham City from Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old heads to the West Midlands after netting 47 goals in 103 appearances for the Scottish Premiership side in three years at Pittodrie.

He now links up with Aitor Karanka’s squad as the Blues look to improve on their precarious position in the Championship that sees them sit in 20th place with 27 points – four ahead of Rotherham United in the bottom three having played two games more than the Millers.

Impressive Goalscoring Record

Cosgrove played at youth-team level for Everton and Wigan Athletic, and it was while at the latter where he gained experience out on loan with Barrow and North Ferriby United respectively.

He secured a free transfer to Carlisle United in August 2017, before he ventured north of the border to Aberdeen the following January.

In his first full season at the club, the striker scored 21 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions and improved on that total in the 2019/20 campaign after finding the net 23 times.

Injury somewhat curtailed his progress this season, as he missed the side’s Europa League qualifying campaign and the first ten games of the Scottish Premiership season with a cartilage problem.

He has scored three goals this season and scored what proved to be his final Aberdeen goal in a 2-1 victory over St Johnstone on Boxing Day.

Cosgrove Becomes Second January Signing

Cosgrove’s arrival means he is the Blues’ second signing of the January window following Rekeem Harper’s loan move from West Bromwich Albion.

City fans will be hoping the Beverley-born forward lives up to his goalscoring reputation, as he links up with a Blues attack that has managed just 19 goals in 26 Championship games.

He could be the player Birmingham need to fire them to the safety of mid-table after flirting with relegation for much of the season.
