Following Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Betfred Cup, fans have been calling for Neil Lennon’s departure. Some fans had been calling for his sacking prior to kick-off, but Celtic bosses are now set to hold talks with the 49-year-old, according to Sky Sports.
Neil Lennon Set for Talks With Celtic Hierarchy
A Comparatively Abysmal Start for Neil Lennon and Celtic
The Celtic boss is now under increasing pressure following the defeat in the Cup that they won last year. Celtic are now 11 points behind their bitter old-firm rivals Rangers albeit, they do have two games in hand.
The 2-0 loss also marks four home defeats in a row, something they have not experienced in over 60 years.
Additionally, the club has only won two out of their last ten games in all competitions now. It is safe to say that this recent run of form is deeply uncharacteristic of the club who have won nine consecutive Scottish Premiership crowns.
Four days prior to this upset, the Celtic boss was reassured by the board of his position after Celtic were well-beaten by Sparta Prague in the Europa League. The Northern Irishman spoke about having the full-backing of the Celtic hierarchy, yet it remains unclear whether their latest defeat will impact their decision-making going forward.
Fans Turn Against Management Team and Players
Scenes turned ugly outside Celtic Park after the final whistle, as fans clashed with the police. Angry supporters gathered outside of the stadium to shout abuse and throw missiles, which resulted in two officers being injured.
Celtic released a statement shortly after the violence died down, stating that players were left ‘shaken’. Whilst a member of the Celtic party described the scenes as ‘scary and horrifying’.
Celtic’s next test is their most difficult yet, with a trip to AC Milan on Thursday. The Italian side lead the way in Serie A and are five points above Inter Milan in second.
