Uruguay Confirm Luis Suarez Positive COVID-19 Test
Blow for Atletico Madrid and Suarez
The news comes to add yet another case to a worryingly increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases within the footballing world in the midst of what is slowly being seen as a pointless international break.
The news also deals Atletico Madrid the biggest of blows heading into the next La Liga weekend, in which they are set to square off against Barcelona in an early-season title clash.
Now, without one of their main men due to the positive news, Diego Simeone’s side may struggle to earn the always crucial points against what is currently a vulnerable Barcelona side.
Suarez has taken to the Simeone system with perfection, linking with the likes of Joao Felix to form a side capable of league success. Yet, with his COVID-19 positive test, will miss the game against his former club; a game he would have undoubtedly been eagerly anticipating.
Questions Must Be Asked
Questions now need to be asked of those making the decisions within the footballing world of whether or not these international breaks are necessary or simply putting the players at risk?
In truth, too, especially in the case of the friendly games, they are simply not needed amid one of the most congested season’s of all time alongside a global pandemic.
Players are being asked to break away from their bubbles, pack their bags, mix in new bubbles with a whole set of players- all from around Europe’s top leagues- and play in a game that quite literally contributes towards nothing.
And the COVID-19 cases have predictably followed as have the injury concerns amongst players.
