REPORT: Jerome Boateng Will Leave Bayern Munich This Summer

Jerome Boateng will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the current Bundesliga season. German site Sport Bild has reported that the 32-year-old centre back is not going to be offered a new deal. This is despite Boateng’s agent, Damir Smoljan, stating recently that new contract talks were going to begin imminently. It now seems that Bayern are not going to be opening those talks.

Jerome Boateng has been at the heart of the Bayern Munich defence since 2011 and is said to be disappointed not to be offered a new deal. From defence, he has contributed to 24 assists and scored nine goals in a total of 333 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Potential Destinations for Boateng

At 32, Boateng will attract several suitors around the world with Bild citing the USA as a potential destination. Other clubs rumoured to hold an interest are Premier League clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. In the last transfer window, following the shut down for Corona Virus, Boateng was also linked with a move to Italian giants, Juventus.

Free

With Munich not offering a new contract, it does mean that the Germany international can leave for free. Chelsea did show interest in the defender in the summer but Frank Lampard opted for another free transfer, bringing in Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal’s defensive frailties were again laid bare when they were defeated 3-0 at home by Aston Villa in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta reportedly had Boateng on his shortlist in the summer and could be ready to look again.

Replacements For Bayern Munich Defender

Sport Bild reports that RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is on Bayern’s radar as a replacement for Boateng, with Manchester United also keeping tabs on the Leipzig player.

The news of having to move on will be disappointing for Boateng, but he has suffered from injuries in the past three seasons. And now, it seems a certainty that he will leave Bayern in the summer.
