Manchester United will make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer, according to Paul Hirst, of The Times.

Manchester United to Make Dayot Upamecano Move Next Summer

Attractive Release Clause

The report claims Manchester United had considered pursuing the defender this summer, however, Upamecano signed a new three-year deal with RB Leipzig. In doing so, the Bundesliga side removed his £45 million release clause and retained the player’s commitment, for the immediate future anyway.

With that said, it is added that the French defender’s release clause will be an affordable £38 million come the summer of 2021. That is something Manchester United are likely to want to take advantage of.

Upamecano is one of the most highly thought of defenders in the game right now. Any suitors will be signing a talented young defender with clear ability. His future is very much bright, whether it’s red, will be another matter.

Solskjaer Comments on Upamecano

The Red Devils will come up against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night. In his pre-match press conference for the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked about Upamecano. His response: “There are always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United.

“I’ve always tried to respect that they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player that we are linked to but since he’s playing against us tomorrow I know he’s a very good player so we can see him up close.”

Solskjaer doing very little to undermine United’s reported interest.

United Defence Is Crying Out for Improvements

United’s defence hasn’t looked all that convincing for some time now. Even with the impressive return of Axel Tuanzebe v Paris Saint-Germain last week, he’s not one you envisage taking the mantle and running with it, having spent a lot of his time since being promoted to the senior team in the medical room. Like Eric Bailly, there is a lot to prove on that front. Whilst United have defended better in the last two games, they have always lacked consistency. Unless they can go on a sparkling long run of defending well, then it’s hard to be totally convinced.

Dayot Upamecano would add a lot to United’s defence, an option for the long-term too. It’s no surprise that Solskjaer is making his admiration of the Frenchman known.
