The 2019/20 season saw Atalanta record an incredible amount of goals in a single season. In the 38 match campaign, the Serie A club scored 98 goals. What made this even more remarkable was the fact they did not have a player finish with 20 goals or more in the season. Already in the 2020/21 campaign, they are displaying similar goal-scoring firepower.
Goals Continue to Fly in for Atalanta
Goals, Goals, and More Goals
Atalanta currently lead all Serie A clubs with 13 goals in three matches. This goal-scoring record allows them to top the table entering the October international break. In each of their three victories, they have scored four goals or more. Their most recent victory came against Cagliari when they unleashed five goals to overpower their opponents 5-2. At this rate, they appear destined to eclipse their 98 goals from last season. They started with seven goals in their first three matches during the last campaign and have scored almost double that amount to begin the 2020/21 season.
Not Limited to One Source of Goals
Much like last season, they are finding goals from different sources. They do not rely on a single player or duo of players to carry them when it comes to goal scoring. During the 2019/20 campaign, Josip Illicic scored 15 goals, while Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel each contributed 18 goals. Right behind them were Robin Gosens and Mario Pasalic with nine goals apiece.
So far in the 2020/21 season, they have seen eight different players record goals. They continue to get contributions from different sources and it is paying dividends. Papu Gomez has emerged as the early leader for the club with four goals in three appearances but right behind him are Muriel and Hans Hateboer with two goals apiece.
As the season continues this electrifying goal-scoring pace should continue to be a strength for Atalanta. They are coming off of a successful season in the UEFA Champions League and domestically in Serie A and this season promises to yield similar results. Atalanta is exciting to watch and have taken Serie A by storm. Keep an eye on their goal tally as the 2020/21 season progresses as they eye a season of over 100 goals scored in Serie A.
