REPORT: Steven Gerrard Turns Down Head Coach Role at Bristol City

Steven Gerrard

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has turned down the opportunity to join Championship side Bristol City, according to the Bristol Post’s Gregor MacGregor. The former Liverpool captain was thought to be the favourite to land the role after the sacking of Lee Johnson. However, he has opted to stay in Scotland and not pursue the opportunity offered by the Robins.

Gerrard Want to Continue Rangers Project

It is thought that Gerrard was keen to stay at Rangers and continue the project he has started there. His side were unable to stop Celtic from once again winning the league this season but they did close the gap between the two sides. Gerrard has also led them to a Scottish Cup final in his time there.

In addition, Gerrard signed a four-year contract with the club only in December, signalling his commitment to the cause north of the border.

Other Options

It’s previously been reported that Bristol City were also keen on Aston Villa assistant boss John Terry. However, Villains manager Dean Smith revealed in a press conference that Terry would not be going anywhere.

Elsewhere, former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton was initially a strong candidate for the job. His name has not been mentioned much recently, but with Gerrard now ruling himself out and Terry also not set to take the job, the club’s attention could now turn back to Hughton.

A new name to enter the frame now, though, is Danny Cowley. The former Lincoln City boss was surprisingly sacked by Huddersfield Town earlier this week and some reports suggest he is now the favourite.
