Timo Werner has been linked with a move to Liverpool for what seems like an eternity now. One moment, the Reds look in pole position to sign the German and the next, a deal seems as unlikely as ever. The fact is, due to the current coronavirus crisis, Liverpool are not willing to commit to a deal. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool are not planning any major business during the crisis.
REPORT: Timo Werner Willing to Stay Put This Summer
The Foward Wants Liverpool, and Liverpool Only
One piece of good news for Liverpool fans, however, is Werner’s willingness to stay put at RB Leipzig for another year. Ornstein stated that the German forward wants Liverpool or nothing this summer.
If true, Liverpool would get one more chance to secure the forward’s signature next summer. And as each year passes, the release clause of the 24-year-old will only decrease. Werner’s release clause this summer is as high as £60 million; next summer this will decrease to £40 million: the summer after that, it will decrease to as low as £25 million with the clause ending on June 15th of each year.
So, if Liverpool just play the waiting game that little bit longer, they could secure a deal for a world-class forward for a bargain price. Add into that the fact that the German will be entering his prime age and the low price of the deal seems even more incredible.
Klopp has Already Held Discussions
Jurgen Klopp and Timo Werner’s desire to work with each other hasn’t exactly been kept a secret. And according to The Athletic, the two have finally held discussions about a potential move when finances allow for a deal to be made. The pair seem like a match made in heaven, too, with Werner’s pace matching Klopp’s constant pressing machine that is Liverpool.
It is clear that this is a deal that both parties want, but we may, in fact, be forced to wait until next summer to see Werner wear the Liverpool red.
