EFL Announce Delay in Return to Training
Training Not to Return Until May 25
Clubs will not return to training until “May 25 at the earliest”, the EFL have announced this evening.
Teams across the three divisions were expected to return soon but plans have been delayed.
In a statement released by the EFL, they warned “the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic will not be rectified simply by a return to play behind closed doors. “
It continued: “Current attention is clearly on the immediate next steps, but the long-term impact on the League and its Clubs remains as stark as previously outlined, and solutions are still required to fill the financial hole left by the crisis.
“The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic will not be rectified simply by a return to play behind closed doors.
“Dialogue continues with our colleagues across the footballing and political landscape regarding these and other issues, and the EFL is committed to keeping all relevant parties updated on key decisions and developments as they occur.”
Project Restart to See Football Return
The Government has announced plans to allow football to restart as they begin to relax restrictions.
There is no timeframe as to when football fans will be allowed to return to stadiums.
The Government could also choose to delay the restart of football beyond June 1; this decision will be taken based on the rate of infection with coronavirus.
The return of football is included within stage two of the Government’s 50-page road-map out of lockdown.
Specifically, it includes: “permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind-closed-doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact.”
The Premier League have been discussing ‘Project Restart’ as they look to come up with a specific manner of how to get the season finalised.
The decisions are yet to be finalised with neutral venues and no relegation having been options discussed.
