REPORT: Virgil van Dijk Aiming to Become a Liverpool Legend

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire to stay at the club for a long time, saying he “wants to achieve incredible things” at Anfield.

Becoming an Anfield Legend

The Dutchman has Spoken

Speaking to SPORT, van Dijk spoke about his intentions of becoming one of the Liverpool greats, and how he wants to stay apart of the “Liverpool family” for years to come.

He said: “We have a fantastic team, we don’t lack anything, we have all the tools necessary to go on winning: A coach that we identify with, a versatile squad, a style of play that breeds victories, a stadium and supporters that play their part.

“I would like to be one of those players that return to Anfield after retiring. I see club legends at games and I feel part of a really big family.”

Furthermore, when questioned on how he would like to be remembered in Merseyside, his response was: “As a Liverpool legend. I want to achieve incredible things here.”

These words will no doubt be met with optimism from supporters of the club, as they hope to see their number 4 continue his fine performances with the league leaders for the foreseeable future.

Success at Liverpool

Since arriving from fellow Premier League side Southampton in the 2018 January transfer window, van Dijk has gone on to cement his status as one of the best centre-backs in world football, if not the best.

The Dutchman was signed by Jurgen Klopp for the hefty fee of £75 million, but the colossal defender has since rubbished suggestions that the club over-payed for his services.

Van Dijk has been at the heart of a side that has lifted the UEFA Champions League, Super Cup and World Club Championship over the past year, and looks set to be crowned a Premier League champion in the next few weeks as well.

Furthermore, the defender has achieved a number of individual awards during his time in the North-West of England, picking up accolades such as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award.

Future at Liverpool

With his contract in place until the summer of 2023, van Dijk looks set to enjoy at least another three years at the club. The defender has already discussed his long-term future with manager Jurgen Klopp and will be hoping to add to his list of medals over the next few campaigns.

Furthermore, at the age of 28, van Dijk has quite a few seasons left in him at the top of his game and looks likely to achieve his goals of becoming one of the greats at Anfield.

Despite the lack of football across the globe at the moment, Van Dijk has been keeping himself busy, and recently took to social media to express his desire to get back on the pitch.
