Timo Werner Transfer Complicated by Quotas

Timo Werner

Liverpool’s summer transfer activity may be impacted by the Premier League’s rules. The rules state that clubs must name no more than 17 overseas players in their 25 man squad. This means that any interest Jurgen Klopp’s side have in players such as Timo Werner may be impacted. The squad may also be limited to 23 players.

Liverpool’s Timo Werner Interest Complicated

Timo Werner Liverpool Move In Doubt

One player who has been consistently linked with Liverpool is RB Leipzig striker, Timo Werner. However, Liverpool have already fulfilled their quota of overseas players meaning that they can’t sign Werner without selling current squad members.

It is likely that some overseas squad options will move on at the end of the season. Dejan Lovren was close to a move last summer and could move on in summer. Cult heroes Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi could also move on in search of more regular playing time.

This would free up space for Werner and potentially other overseas players too. Those linked with Jurgen Klopp’s side include Kylian Mbappe and Kai Havertz; marked improvements over the current squad players.

Liverpool’s Homegrown Players

In order to have a full Premier League squad of 25 players, Liverpool must include 8 homegrown players. Currently, Liverpool employ 17 homegrown players though the bulk of these will move on. Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne, for example, will depart the club on the expiry of their contracts.

Only 5 of Liverpool’s homegrown slots will be occupied before any transfers or promotions.  Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all remain homegrown senior players, while Trent Alexander-Arnold turned 21 so will also be included.

Youth players such as Harry Wilson or Nat Phillips could benefit if Jurgen Klopp decides that he would prefer to have a full squad. Both are homegrown players and have the talent to succeed at Liverpool. Liverpool could also step up interest in reported targets such as Jadon Sancho or Todd Cantwell.
