Career So Far
At 19-years-old, McCallum’s career is only just taking off. However, in his short time as a player, he has already impressed immensely.
The youngster spent time at the Jamie Vardy V9 Academy, set up to help non-league players get moves to clubs. There, he caught the attention of Herne Bay, where he spent his youth career.
Coventry spotted the youngster and made a move for him at the start of the 2018/19 season. He made his debut in November of that year, coming on as a substitute in an EFL Trophy game against Cheltenham Town.
So far this season, McCallum has helped Coventry in their promotion push, a remarkable feat considering they currently do not have a ground of their own and have been sharing St Andrews with nearby Birmingham City.
McCallum has scored three goals in all competitions this season, including two in League One which came away at Wycombe Wanderers and at home to MK Dons.
What Was Said
Speaking to the club website, McCallum said: “The last 24 hours have been hectic to say the least but quite overwhelming as well. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms, so it’s been good as well.
“I’m quite an athletic player. I play left-back but I can play wing-back as well, so I like to get up and down the wings.
“The club’s got a good philosophy of bringing through young players like Max and Jamal, as well as Ben Godfrey. It’s a good philosophy.”
Head coach Daniel Farke added: “Sam is a very interesting talent and we’re delighted that he sees his long-term future with us.
“We’re all excited by his potential. He’s a young, homegrown player who we hope can continue to develop and improve. We will allow him to work with all of the right tools in our environment and look forward to seeing how far he can progress.”
