Rodwell, 28, has been without a club since leaving Blackburn Rovers in the summer.
The former Sunderland midfielder could, however, make a return with Premier League Sheffield United.
The Blades have been a surprise package this term, scalping points from Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.
Rodwell’s versatility makes him an attractive prospect to United boss Chris Wilder.
Injury problems have restricted his playing time during a career in which he started at Everton and Manchester City.
Rodwell switched to Sunderland for around £10 million prior to switching to Ewood Park in 2018.
The three-time England-capped international made 22 appearances for Blackburn Rovers last term.
He also went and trialled for Italian giants Roma and trained with Parma as he searched for new employers.
The 28-year-old will be looked at Wilder as the Blades boss contemplates whether he will fit into his existing squad.
Rodwell is primarily a midfielder but can also feature in defence – a position where Wilder likes his players to be ball-playing and comfortable.
When asked by the media about the situation, Wilder said: “There’s still a lot of football to be played and the league is intense, as we’ve seen. So it’ll take its toll on the group.”
