Aaron Mooy – Career So Far

Born in Sydney, Aaron Mooy moved to English football in 2006. He joined the Bolton Wanderers academy as a teenager. After spells in Scotland with St. Mirren, Mooy headed back down under for a few years. Eventually, he came back to England when he signed for Manchester City in 2016. He was loaned to Huddersfield Town immediately. Mooy was instrumental in their promotion to the Premiership. In fact, he was named in the PFA and EFL Championship teams of the 2016/17 season. That prompted Huddersfield to make the loan signing permanent. Mooy joined the Terriers for a then club-record fee of £8 million in 2017.

Mooy impressed in the top flight as well. He helped the Terriers beat the drop in the 2017/18 season. The Australian could not quite replicate that form last season though as Huddersfield Town got relegated. However, he still was Huddersfield’s standout player in the 2018/19 season.

How Will He Fare at His New Club?

Aaron Mooy should do well for Graham Potter’s side. The Brighton Head Coach likes to play a passing game. Brighton & Hove Albion’s signing of Aaron Mooy could be crucial for them this season. The Australian might well become a vital cog in Graham Potter’s system. This is what Graham Potter had to say about the signing:

“We are delighted to welcome Aaron to the club. He has played very well over the past two seasons in the Premier League, and will bring a different option and added competition to our midfield.

Potter added, “He’s been a talisman for Huddersfield in recent seasons with his performances on the field; and he’s proved to be an excellent professional both on and off the pitch.

The manager expresses how he is “looking forward to working with him, and he is another good addition to our squad ahead of the new season.”

A Twist in the Tale?

The interesting thing about this transfer is that Mooy signed a new deal with Huddersfield before making the loan move. This is slightly unusual to see from a Championship side. However, it is a shrewd move by the Terriers to keep Mooy on their books. If they can come straight back up, they will be able to keep their star man for their next endeavour in the English top flight.
